The Rail initiative of Council has concluded
The Mount Gambier Railway Lands is a unique and exciting new public space located in the heart of the City of Mount Gambier.
'The Rail' is an initiative of the City of Mount Gambier which aims support the community to test and trial a range events and activities at the Railway Lands.
In the lead up to the opening of the site, The Rail project team has completed over 80 site meetings and tours to introduce a range of community members to the space, each of which have shared their ideas and provided feedback.
As a result of these meetings, the Official Opening held on Sunday 15 November showcased a diverse range of activities, all of which were led and contributed to by our local community. The event created a fantastic opportunity to start experiencing first-hand how The Rail can lend itself to a variety of different events and activities moving forward.
The Rail project team was onsite at the opening to explore ideas about how the Railway Lands can continue to develop as a unique and exciting public space for the City of Mount Gambier. This feedback has been collated and will inform how we best encourage and manage activity at the site.

The Rail initiative of Council has concluded
Walked the length of the Rail lands during Easter and wish to congratulate the Council on the initiative. Many people were using the walk way and the grounds/playgrounds/coffee shop near the platform. Some constructive feedback for the future: over Easter and long weekends, the toilet facilities on the platform could do with some extra cleaning and some seating from Bay Road through to Pick Avenue and from White Avenue through to Wehl Street would be good for people to relax, rest and enjoy the scenery. Look forward to more toilet facilities and the upgrade of the station building in the future. Ruth Cameron

Hi im loving the rail lands walkway but its very hard for children to see where the roads are and as parents even being able to see where the roads are. It would be great to have an S fence or something more physical so children know when to stop and as parents walking a few meters behind being able to identify where the roads are.
Thanks

A big thumbs up for those that finally succeed in getting this up and running. It's time that we look towards the future, and not be afraid of it. This would have to be one of the best open places I have seen in the country.

I really don't like the idea of a skate park - we already have two of them. Maybe council could spend a bit of time around the two skate parks in town and listen to the foul language and bad behaviour coming from some (not all) of the youth hanging out at our existing skate parks. I would definitely not be bringing my young grandchildren to the rail lands if there was a skate park present. I have been witness on several occasions to groups of young adults congregating around the entrance to the shopping centre across the road - they are intimidating - especially to older people. I think The rail lands is a great place for families of all ages to enjoy - why do we have to muck it up with a skate park.

A nice new skatepark would be fantastic! Hopefully one with decent lighting as well?
Being a local skateboarder in Mt Gambier, and knowing how beneficial skateboarding has been to my life (keeping me out of all sorts of trouble) I'm absolutely positive it would be a great opportunity for our future youth to get a brand new one and be able to have their say in who builds it and what they build.

I think a skate park would be good idea to have down at the railways land, but the council will need to get involved with the kids that skate and see what they would like to see down there on the skatepark and not yet guess what kids like . If they don't talk to the kids they will hate it and not go to it often, it needs to be good as it will bring all kinds off good skaters in and around Australia. And it will bring in comp's and the best skaters to the mount area

Fully support the push for a skate park in the rail lands and strongly believe it should have been part of the initial plan.
A great way for people young and old to enjoy the space and get out and about more. Parents can go do shopping while their children play at the skate park. Park users can easily access drinks and food from nearby shops rather than having to venture back into town to do so.
100% support this venture.

What happened to the initial concept of providing parking, so people could get exercise by walking to shops. Yes it provides a functional area for the community. Biggest draw back appears to be a lack of parking availability in the immediate area & loss of parking availability to private residents over a great number of surrounding streets.
Another issue personally faced, is predestrians (also with prams) & bike riders moving out on to Wehl St Sth from The Rail as if they have priority over moving traffic on the road. What does council propose for the safety in this area?

Love the concept of a combined skatepark and youth space ! Let's make it cutting edge and a real draws card for young families and our youth! Give our skaters and bikers a chance to share their ideas! We need something not only for our own community but for our visitors as well!

Just showing some support for a skatepark to be built in the railway lands. After being involved in the skatepark competition over the weekend it really opened my eyes for what can be accomplished here in Mount Gambier. Imagine the music festival we could have in that strip with the local punk bands and rock bands. It opens so many opportunities, it's what the youth want they have been pushing for this for so long and it would be so rewarding for them. Everyone is quick to say there's nothing for youth but when we provide ideas that the YOUTH has put forward we shut them down. They need this and the town needs this. #therail5290

I'd love to see a skate park built at the rail! It would be such a great, central location which would provide safety and security for young people.
Also Sunday market stalls would be great to see!

Funding for a skate park in Mount Gambier would be a progressive step forward for the town. It would get frequently used and provide a space for the youth of mount gambier to engage in positive activities to focus on.

I'd like to see a pedestrian footbridge for Bay Road when the Rail Trail begins development. Couch Street and Pick Avenue have signalled intersections relatively nearby, but low-traffic streets such as Ferrers could maybe used a non-signalled pedestrian crossing or raised table as commonly seen in Adelaide and Melbourne suburban traffic management. A new skate park sounds cool but I'd hope the CCTV upgrade considers the skate park for monitoring for the health of the facility. Adelaide's City Sk8 was a good example and a few concepts could be taken from Adelaide like live cam, public toilets, shelters, water fountains, day and night lighting etc.

Hi,
I support the funding of a new skatepark at the rail lands, the turnout for the skate competition on the weekend shows just how much use a new skatepark would get and how much tourism it will bring to a town.
Thanks Shaun

G'day,
I think a skatepark / youth activity area will be a great improvement to the rail lands. It will bring the youth together in town, close to the local business and will improve the local community.
cheers.

I support funding for a skate park facility at the rail lands. It would be an incredible use for the space, getting the youth out of the house, off their gadgets, into the community.
