Consultation has concluded

The Mount Gambier Pump Track is a community facility which responds to strong community demand for fit-for-purpose cycling related infrastructure in Mount Gambier. Its development was prioritised through the development of a range of Coucil's strategic plans, including its Youth Engagement Strategy, endorsed by Council in late 2017.

In 2019, Council made provision for the track development in its annual budget and Swiss based company Velosolutions was engaged by to deliver the $150,000 project which incorporated the right to host at least two Red Bull Pump Track World Championship qualifying meetings locally.

Located adjacent to the existing BMX track facility in Hastings Cunningham Reserve, the positioning of the facility allows families and young people to access the pump track on their bikes and scooters via the rail trail corridor.

The durable all weather facility is designed to be accessible for first time riders and kids while still providing a challenge for more experienced riders. A pump track bridges the gap between a skate park and a BMX track and enables easy access for people to get involved.

Mountain bike and cycle tourism is a growing sector nationally and internationally and Coucncil's investment in this facility provides Mount Gambier with an opportunity to build on its strengths as a cycling destination and provide economic benefit to the city.

As the Mount Gambier Pump Track is a new facility, we're interested in hearing about the things that will help to make sure that the space is enjoyable and safe for everyone who uses it.

In consultation with pump track entusiasts, Council has developed some initial signage for the site that says:

This public facility is the result of the energy and enthusiasm of local community members who have worked alongside the City of Mount Gambier throughout its development.

Please care for the space and all of those who use it by:

    Respecting the space:
    • This is a smoke and alcohol free area.
    • No glass containers on or around the track.
    • Motorised equipment is not permitted on the track.
    • Keep the area clean and place all rubbish in the bins provided.
    Being safe:
    • All track users must wear a helmet. Additional safety equipment is strongly advised.
    • Be cautious. Do not attempt anything beyond your ability.
    • Maintain a safe distance between riders at all times. No double or chain riding.
    • Only use this facility during daylight hours.
    • Children under 12 years must be directly supervised by an adult at all times.
    • Visitors/spectators not riding must remain outside of pump track riding area.
    Considering others:
    • This facility is for everyone in our community. Please share the track and consider the safety and enjoyment of others.
What are your thoughts about the content of this signage? Is it missing anything? Are there other things that need to be considered to make sure the track is safe and enjoyable for all people who wish to use it?
