A community vision for our regional capital

As South Australia's regional capital, Mount Gambier serves as a central point to access essential infrastructure, services, business, employment and education not only for local residents but also for those in the surrounding towns and areas.

Much has changed in Mount Gambier since the last vision was crafted in 2011. This is why, hand in hand with our community, we're commencing the development of a new Community Vision named Mount Gambier 2035.

Developing our Community Vision

Mount Gambier 2035 is a vision for the future of our city, developed by our community between November 2023 and June 2024. While City of Mount Gambier facilitated the process, many people beyond those living within Council’s boundaries participate in and have a stake in the life of the city. Residents, workers, students, visitors, business owners, and anyone connected to Mount Gambier were invited to contribute to this vision.

Community members and key stakeholders contributed their stories, ideas and perspectives throughout two consultation phases. Our Mount Gambier 2035 Community Panel used this input to inform their thinking and discussions to shape the vision for Mount Gambier's future.

For full details on the process, please refer to the Mount Gambier 2035 Engagement Report.

Community Vision endorsed by Council on 16 July 2024

"A volcanic past with a crystal clear future."

In 2035, Mount Gambier is a connected hub nestled on the slopes of an ancient volcano; a haven of natural beauty. It is a place of stories, where our community is family, nurtured through growth, opportunity and connection.

Five strategic priorities represent the key focus areas that will contribute to achieving our vision for the future:

  1. Environment and Liveability
  2. Learning and Innovation
  3. Infrastructure and Services
  4. Economic and Business Growth
  5. A Vibrant Community

These priorities are underpinned by 3 key principles that should underpin our approach to everything we do: connected, accessible and sustainable.

Supporting all of this is a statement of identity which is a summary of the stories, values and special qualities of what it means to be from 'the Mount'. Which is ultimately about belonging, a connection to place.

We invite all community members to read the vision and reflect on the roles we each play in bringing this vision to life.

What happens next?

Achieving this vision will require a collaborative approach and everyone will have a role to play. Once the vision is endorsed by Council, we’ll turn our discussion to the many opportunities for this work to influence our planning and day to day activity as a community. As an example, the vision will directly influence Council’s next strategic plan, which will be developed and adopted by November 2024.

Council will support it by sharing stories from community members who are already ‘living the vision’, helping to bring the document to life. This approach was a recommendation of the community panel during their presentation to Council.
