Melaleuca Reserve Pump Track
Consultation has concluded
For many years, Melelauca Reserve (located on the corner of Douglas Street and Pressey Street), has hosted a basic dirt BMX track facility. The track has been informally maintained by park users and is constructed in a temporary manner from dirt/ground sourced within the reserve area.
Ongoing consultation with park users and the surrounding neighbourhood has highlighted strong aspirations for the track to be enhanced, with a particular interest in improving safety, usability and the visual appeal of the current facility.
Council has allocated budget for improvements to the reserve and, in line with community feedback, has since sought quotations attached to the redevelopment of the existing track.
The design incorporates a 91 metre looped track which covers much of the footprint of the existing facility. The construction will include an asphalt seal to improve the year-round use of the facility and a raised starting platform.
The design provides for an entry level pump track which is designed as a smaller, entry level track wich will complement the larger Mount Gambier Pump Track. It will feature a range of jumps and berms and create an exciting new family-friendly facility for the Melaleuca neighbourhood.

Share Why is it been built over the old track iv got heaps of people that appose to it been built in another area on the reserve theres more then enough room plus me and the kids around the area have really put some work into the box track that's there not to mention if you cut the big tree down your going to to build it in 10 year when all the roots rote out it will cause the pump track to get wreaked as well as the kids will build another dirt track aroumd the pump track causing it to get dirt and rocks and sticks all over it because other pump tracks havent got trees around them like this one going to have if it is built there and what's the use if its going to be a waist of money in years to come because of thease reasons we could build it at the end of the bmx track or even beside it were sticks won't fall on it no trees need to be removed so no roots roteing out cause teach to maybe get little ruts in it and the kids won't dig dirt all over it making it look bad I am the one responsible for fixing the old track i keep the hole park clean from rubbish and clean the track thats there now and maintain it as well as weed the play ground and stop people from wreaking this i am doing a proper document to not stop the construction of the track but to build in a different area on the park because of reasons i mentioned above thanks kind regards Chad keenan on Facebook Share Chad asked over 4 years agoHi Chad
Thanks for your feedback regarding the proposed Melaleuca Pump Track and its location within the reserve.
Over recent years, Council has received a range of feedback from the local neighbourhood regarding safety attached to the existing dirt track. Due to its inconsistent layout and the capacity for individuals to modify sections to suit their own experience level, ongoing feedback suggests that there is a history of riders (particularly those who are smaller or inexperienced) being prone to injury when utilising the existing facility.
The upgrade of the track aims to alleviate these issues and create a permanent, easily maintained, all-weather track which provides a more consistent and safer alternative for all who use it.
In line with the requests from the broader Melaleuca community, it is proposed that the existing dirt track will be removed in its entirety and any further community-led building of dirt tracks in the reserve will be actively discouraged.
The positioning of the proposed pump track considers the existing use of this area of the reserve and the interests of other user groups, such as those with small children, to safely enjoy other sections of the reserve at the same time. The proposed design and location allows for appropriate drainage and the retention of large trees. It also allows ample space in the reserve for alternative recreational activity in the adjacent open areas.
Council has also considered your concerns regarding the presence of trees within the footprint and an assessment has been conducted by our Engineering staff. We're confident that large trees can be retained as part of the proposed development and, due to the design and materials used, their presence will not negatively impact the facility in the future.
While we acknowledge that this may not be your preferred option, we welcome your ongoing interest in the project and we thank you for your commitment to ensuring the reserve continues to be a quality space for the enjoyment of the Melaleuca neighbourhood.
