------------------
Since its official opening in 2015, the Mount Gambier Railway Lands has fast become an active, inner-city public space enjoyed by residents and visitors. Building on the existing space, City of Mount Gambier has sought community feedback regarding a new playspace concept design and a first draft design for the proposed youth activity hub.
Previous consultation
In 2022, Council undertook community consultation to gather ideas for a redevelopment of the nature play area at the site. More than 70 ideas were submitted, including comments and images of other examples of much-loved play spaces. These ideas played an important role in informing the designs which are now presented for your consideration.
Railway Lands play precinct concept design
Council is considering concept design for new play infrastructure opposite the existing creek bed on the western end of the Railway Lands. The play structures include natural materials and is inspired by its former use as a rail corridor for our city. The concept plan can be viewed here.
Youth Activity Hub concept plan
A concept design for a youth activity hub is proposed for the area opposite Bay Road. This follows community feedback and key recommendations in both Council's Youth Engagement Strategy and Sport, Recreation Open Space Strategy (SROSS) highlighting the need for a central youth space in our city.
This draft concept plan has been developed to continue discussions within our community about a youth space in the Railway Lands to inform more detailed plans in the future. The draft concept plan can be viewed here.
Learn to ride space
A purpose-built learn to ride streetscape concept has been endorsed by Council for the western platform.
Previous announcements about this development can be found here. Please note that the design of the learn to ride space has already been approved is not part of the current round of consultation.
Next steps
Following consultation, your feedback will be considered in the overall design and budget and where possible incorporated into the final design. Council is actively exploring funding opportunities to complement existing budget allocations for the development of these spaces.
Funding has already been allocated for the learn to ride facility and development has commenced.
