The Rail initiative of Council has concluded

The Mount Gambier Railway Lands is a unique and exciting new public space located in the heart of the City of Mount Gambier.

'The Rail' is an initiative of the City of Mount Gambier which aims support the community to test and trial a range events and activities at the Railway Lands.

In the lead up to the opening of the site, The Rail project team has completed over 80 site meetings and tours to introduce a range of community members to the space, each of which have shared their ideas and provided feedback.

As a result of these meetings, the Official Opening held on Sunday 15 November showcased a diverse range of activities, all of which were led and contributed to by our local community. The event created a fantastic opportunity to start experiencing first-hand how The Rail can lend itself to a variety of different events and activities moving forward.

The Rail project team was onsite at the opening to explore ideas about how the Railway Lands can continue to develop as a unique and exciting public space for the City of Mount Gambier. This feedback has been collated and will inform how we best encourage and manage activity at the site.

The rail lands is a good addition to Mount Gambier. The area is pretty, yet lacks a few items to make it more used. Simple improvements to boost appeal and use are: an access ramp on the corner of Gray St so that bike riders don't have to do an unorthodox manouvre to access the ramp at the end of the station; a priority crossing on Wehl St Sth with a raised platform and STOP signs on Wehl St Sth so that drivers get used to giving priority to healthier transport and; block off Railway Tce to cars at the intersection to Gray St. Maintain Railway-Gray connectivity to Bay Rd.

The section with the round house should be preserved because very few roundhouse facilities remain in Australia. Consider creating a special play area that includes equipment like the monorail at Keith. Potentially use it for model machinery works (like Penfield and SASMEE) in conjunction with Tafe.

We went to the Raillands today... awesome concept.. just a couple of things we noticed, not enough bins.. nothing up by the old railways station, so people had left their rubbish on the ground, and no bins by the seats, so once again, people who were too lazy to walk had just thrown their rubbish on the ground. It would be great as well to see a big playground there for kids.. it would draw more people to the site

I took my dog for a walk in The Railway Lands this morning. Delightful.
One question though; where are the bins that I can use to dispose of the doggy do?

I attended the opening of the Railway Lands and, along with many others, was impressed by the beauty and potential of the space. A couple of comments/suggestions...
Loved the children's nature play space and the trailer full of things for kids to play with. It would be great to see something similar for the big kid in all of us - a 'trailer' (or something) where you can get roller-blades, Frisbees, kites, picnic rugs, umbrellas (for shade), soccer ball, football, basketball, city bike hire - a lot of locals/tourists wouldn't have these things on them if they want to 'drop in' at The Rail
Toilets - recurring theme of not enough toilets (on the assumption the port-a-loos are not staying). a parent's room would be a good addition
Please don't add another conventional playground - there are ample impressive, conventional playgrounds already (lakes, Vansittart park).
Great work!
